Prometeo Theatre presents
Filo al Fuego
(Blade to the Heat)
Written by Oliver Mayer
Directed by Joann María Yarrow
Performed by Prometeo Theatre Students
Miami Dade College Auditorium, Wolfson Campus, 300 N.E. 2nd Ave., Miami
Set in 1962 Miami, FILO AL FUEGO takes place in the world of boxing. Mantequilla Decima, the undefeated and beloved Cuban-born world champion, loses his crown in a surprise decision to Pedro Quinn -- a young man whose Spanish is halting and who identifies himself as more American than Mexican. A third fighter, Nuyorican Wilfredo Vinal, creates a firestorm via a rumor that engulfs all three men, not to mention those who love them, making the Mantequilla/Quinn rematch something more than a fight, turning the stage into a battleground. In a time before AIDS, in a place far from border fences and "Don't Ask Don't Tell," FILO AL FUEGO is a play about how Latinos treat one another -- and how men treat men.

A play about friendship. A simple vision of the theatre. A meditation on failure. The characters are simply there, enduring as best they can a life that is not remotely what they had expected. It could be anyone’s biography. (In Spanish)

Spying on a woman as she stands before a mirror, knowing she is alone, with no witnesses to constrain her, could prove a lot of fun. The protagonist dances, sings, makes faces and questions her past and present, her marriage, her prudish education, her relationship with her daughter, her ceramics class and the other activities that fill her day. The growing population of street children, a subject often relegated to the forsaken realm of the painful and uncomfortable, is here addressed with mordant humor that makes no attempt to moralize or offer solutions beyond the scope of art. A play that fosters awareness in children, young people and parents of the importance of building a world where children live in decent conditions, sheltered and protected by family, where they enjoy the right to education and play and develop in an environment of support, equality and love. A story of five lives, five longings for love, five failures. A story of wishing and not knowing what to do, of absurd attempts, of wanting to live every day in spite of everything. A drama in which what counts is what is not seen, what is not said, what drives desire. Fear of not being, fear of being known. A run-down office, a couple’s home, a bar and a medical practice alternate in one space, stringing together the lives of five characters. What links them is loneliness, misunderstanding and the need to love. (In Spanish)
